Applied Mathematics: Satisfying Your Need for Speed

From getting a car to go from 0-60 in less than 3.5 seconds, to getting an airplane to break the sound barrier, our experts explain the critical roles that Calculus and Physics play in their industries. The first week, our guest expert is an Aeronautical Engineer who talks about using different mathematical formulas to design the most aerodynamically effective size, shape, and structure of an aircraft. The same Engineer in the next session will discuss the thermodynamic and gravitational principles that must be factored into the design of a jet. Next, we bring in a Racecar Engineer who discusses the different mathematical principals and physical forces in play behind designing a racecar. The Engineer then discusses the different kinds of forces in play in propelling a car on the ground vs. propelling an aircraft through thin air.
